Moldova (and Transinistria)

This was an interesting destination!

Especially the region of Transinistria, a self declared state (unrecognized but with its own currency, army, president…) that caused, in 1992, a war with Moldova.

Below some pictures of my stay at Chisinau (capital of Moldova) and my daily trip to Tiraspol (‘capital’ of Transinistria):

I liked the parks, people gathering outside and the tasty, cheap local fast food (as well as local beer…)

Direction Transinistria (Pridnestrovie/Transdniestria…)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had the pleasure to meet Mike, a Couchsurfer living in Tiraspol who guided me and provided me with many good info about his own country. Thanks a gain, Mike!

Before going there I read many comments regarding people facing problems crossing the ‘border’. In my experience everything was fine, it’s only a waste of time to queue for the ‘registration’. None asked for a bribe or similar. You only have to keep the registration for the return journey to Chisinau. One more annoying thing is that the form is only in cyrillic and russian language…

  1. If you haven’t already read it, I’d recommend a good book to you called Playing the Moldovans at Tennis by Tony Hawks. He has to play and beat the Moldovan football squad at tennis, one-by-one. Strange idea but a very good read.
