Alberobello, capital of ‘Trullishire’

11138590_581683391974348_6568757988616614000_nIn the last years British have been ‘migrating’ from the beautiful (but very pricey!) Tuscany, renamed ‘Chianti-shire’, after the high number of english visiting and even relocating in that region, to the more convenient (and in my opinion, nicer) Puglia, specifically in what has been called ‘trulli-shire’.
What is a ‘trullo’? As per the pictures posted, an ancient concept of small rounded shape house/cottage, with a removable stone roof.
Alberobello is now very ‘trendy’ among english visitors, however it has always been a well-known destination for italians.

11205029_581683405307680_393383587494878668_nAs a matter of fact the town is listed in the UNESCO world heritage sites, for its unique and picturesque historical centre.
I’m sure everybody visiting Alberobello will enjoy the atmosphere, the sightseeing and the kindness of local people.

Nowadays most of the buildings in the centre are converted into, either apartments for rental or small souvenir shops, where you will be invited for a taste of local products (cookies, liqueurs…).
Here more photo from the beautiful Alberobello:

Puglia/Apulia: I’m back!

11701173_10207406608827728_7323482673874866541_nMy European low-budget/backpacking tour is over since November, last year.

Taranto-Apulia-South italy

unionjack  ‘City of the two seas’ so Taranto is called (check on a map why) with an old ancient greek historical center, which is accessed through a swing bridge.
2013-02-27 13.14.47Taranto is a pearl of beauty hidden from the ashes of a dangerous monster called ilva, biggest steel manufacture in europe (ex Italsider), which under the false promise of jobs has destroyed everything beautiful this area has to offer: a sea and a fantastic land, rich of their delights (grapes, fruit, vegetables, olives, dairy products, fish and shellfish), a mild climate with warm sunshine almost all year round, art, history and culture, with a side of genuine and friendly people.
With these features, any traveler should know this region and fall in love. A region that can offer a crystal clear sea, good food, wine, sincere, and warm sun, archaeological sites and historic interest, interesting inlands and towns to visit, local festivals and folk events.

unionjack Act like a ‘local’
2013-02-25 11.28.09Meet people in the street, talk to them for a long time, drink a coffee, all without rushing. The days are long and the pleasure of meeting someone is something to be exploited to the fullest.
Hate Bari! The capital of the region has never helped, nor did something for Taranto, therefore…
The schedules for the day are different than in the central and northern Italy. The shops are often closed from 13 to 16 remaining open until late evening and this also affects the social life. Lunch is at around 14, then in the evening you can stroll in the center until 20 and then have dinner. In the summer, is moved even further.
Buy local, forget the horrendous shopping malls. In south italy each neighborhood has small shops where you can find everything, without being confined for hours in huge monsters of cement.
Support the freedom of citizens in their battle against the biggest steel plant in Europe, ilva, that assumes and provides only few employment  but with its pollution has increased deaths from cancer. Hoping that the great monster is closed and reclaimed, and that those responsible for these crimes pay with jail, budgeterutrip.com expresses its solidarity with the movement in support of health and town preservation and revival of the territory of Taranto.
Become a supporter of the football team of the city, is not famous or important, but for many ‘Taranto’ is a faith.

faveTaste one of the many culinary specialties, pasta and bread at the base of everything, fish as well as good meat. For vegetarians this area is a paradise, excellent vegetables (try the mashed beans), vegetables, dairy products, topped by the best Italian extra virgin olive oil, not to mention the excellent almonds and much, much more.
Enjoy fast and cheap snacks, baked goods such as panzerotti, puccie, focaccia with olives and tomato, but also sandwiches prepared with fresh ingredients available at any grocery shop.
Drink local, try wine from Puglia, born from the richest Italian grapes (which are the base of any other famous italian wine …), ‘negramaro’ and ‘primitivo’ of all. Locals are proud of the beer in the city, raffo, even if the production is now in the hands of a corporation.
Visit the many countries in the region:
2012-09-14 11.57.44-Grottaglie, pleasant town with an interesting area of ceramics, a well-preserved castle and an ancient historical center made of a dense network of narrow streets, whitewashed houses and ancient churches.

Nearby you can visit: gravine, rocky area where they had originally established the first populations; Fantiano’s quarry, an area used for extraction of local stone, tufo, converted to park, which is home to a music festival with a unique atmosphere.

Grottaglie also offers excellent murals by international artists, who gather each year (in September) to decorate facades and walls of the old town.

-Cisternino, similar to Grottaglie, comes alive in the spring and summer months, when the narrow streets of the old town are full of people walking and outputs for eating in typical restaurants of the country, many butchers in the evening, prepare the meat and serve the customers that can be enjoyed on the spot.

alberobello-Alberobello: Alberobello is known as the Capital of the Trulli. The trullo is a fascinating architectural feature of this area of Puglia, a building with conical roof made without mortar. Alberobello has special status internationally – designated a UNESCO world heritage site – because its collection of some 1,500 trulli in an urban environment is unique. Some of the trulli are now used for stores, restaurants, and lodging. But many are still inhabited by locals, who are very friendly to visitors. As a world heritage site, Alberobello is a tourist attraction, but as it is less accessible from the tourist-heavy west coast, it is not overrun by tourists, and most tourists of Alberobello are Italians.

ostuni -Ostuni, The geography of Ostuni is stunning. The landscape has a unique pallet: from the red earth grow silvery olive trees crowned with green, while the while city stretches before you under an azure sky. The ancient heart of Ostuni is a maze of corridors and stairs, twisting up to a pinnicle with views for miles and miles.

martina-Martina Franca and Locorotondo, nice towns in Valle d’Itria, full of interesting architectures and historical buildings

-Lecce: Lecce has been dubbed the Florence of the South. Whereas many people (not understandably) skip it in favour of the nearby beach towns of the Salento peninsula, this city, distinguished by its elaborate style of baroque buildings, has at least a couple of days of attractions worth seeing

-Otranto: a wonderful seaside town nearby Lecce, with a pleasent old centre, in old greek style, white houses and narrow streets, crowded of people during spring and summer. A must to see in Apulia
