Not easy to get back in the writing habit! My last post was something like 4 months ago and many things changed since then.
Don’t want to bore my 4 dear readers but let me tell you something related to this post, a nice italian song from the golden 80’s said ‘…voglio andare ad Alghero…in compagnia di uno straniero…’, which means ‘wanna go to Alghero with a foreigner companion’.
Well, I did it and my foreigner companion is my beloved girlfriend from Slovakia. I hope a bit of gossip could help rising my followers and contacts 🙂
Anyways, let me start describing Alghero, a small city in Sardinia, the second biggest island in the mediterranean sea (after Sicily), with a very close airport with several low-cost flights from all over Europe.
Alghero is famous for its dialect with catalan’ roots and for its red coral jewelery. The nice city is a very well-known touristic destination, during summer there are many visitors, enjoying the beautiful beaches, sun, good food and nightlife
For this reason I decided to go off-season. Plus I needed a short break after the long polish winter…oh yes! this would be my second gossip news that I’ll treat in more details in the next posts.
To be honest in this period of the year many restaurants, bars and other premises are closed, awaiting for the peak season, however for a budget traveller like me it wasn’t such a big deal.
I could enjoy the more genuine city soul, local people were happy to see tourists and like to take care of them.
I happened to stop in a small bar (nearby the cathedral) for a couple of glasses of ‘cannonau‘ and ‘buio‘, sardinian good quality wines, receiving appetizers and snacks, mostly from genuine local products, such as olives, ‘pane curasau‘, sausages, ‘pecorino‘ cheese…
The same happened in the small B&B run by Giovanni (firstname.lastname@example.org), where I spent 4 nights in a double bed room, for 28Euro/night.
Every morning the owner was preparing a tasty breakfast with local bread, cheese, vegetables, organic extra virgin oil, fresh baked pastries…
In summer, no doubts!
Enjoy the sea and the beaches. Sardinian sea is considered the most beautiful in Europe.
Long white sands beaches are all along the northern cost.
The most famous beach is ‘spiaggia delle bombarde‘, few km far from the city.
Other beaches are ‘Mugoni‘, Lazzaretto, Lido…
Something not to be missed is definitely ‘Capo Caccia‘ and its famous ‘Grotte di Nettuno’, a natural cave accessible either via sea (with organized boat tour, only with good weather!) or via the spectacular ‘Escala del Cabirol’ – Cabirol steps.
You will never forget about its 600 steps, effort paid back by an incredible view.
Capo Caccia is a beautiful cliffs at the end of a natural fiord.
There is also a very nice spot where to enjoy a breathtaking sunset…
Narrow streets, with numerous bars, cafes, restaurants (renowned for excellent seafood like spaghetti with sea urchins) and small artisanal shops.
There are also interesting markets with food and local products, during the week-days.
The road from Alghero to Bosa, a smaller town towards the south coast is also worth, for the beautiful view.
Last but not least, let me suggest to try the sardinian beer ‘Ichnusa’.
Italian beers are not that bad, after all… 🙂
Recently I had an interview for an online italian magazine. It was a nice experience, to tell my story, because I would like that more people could understand that downshifting is a positive path of our life.
In these 2 and half years travelling what I enjoyed the most, were not the wonderful sights, cities, monuments, landscapes … I loved the unique time spent with every single person I met, coming from a different lifestyle, with a different past, history, mentality.
I always thought about writing down what we were talking about. It could have come out an interesting book, collecting thoughts from people, travellers, explorers, free minds.
One of the most interesting person I have met is Ibrahim, we met in Bulgaria, in a hostel. Below you can read his story. I hope you will enjoy it!
Budget Euro Trip: Hi Ibrahim, tell us something about you
I’m originally from Alexandria, Egypt. I have lived in USA, since July/20 /1978.
Since 1977, I’m on the go. I visited all over Europe, except, Andorra, Belarus, Belgium, Cyprus, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Switzerland and Ireland.
In the Caucasus, I visited Georgia. All 50 states in USA, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St.John in the Virgin Island. All ten provinces in Canada, and Yukon Territory.
In the Caribbean, I visited Dominican Republic. In Africa I visited Morocco, and Tunisia. Also, I visited all over Mexico, Central America, except Belize. All over South America, except Falkland Island, The Guiana, Suriname and Paraguay.
In the Middle East, I visited Istanbul in Turkey. In South East Asia, I visited Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos. In Indian Subcontinent, I visited Nepal, and India. In North East Asia, I visited China, Macau, Hong Kong. In South Pacific, I visited Australia, and New Zealand.
I’m free spirited, I could go wherever, whenever I feel like it. I have absolute freedom, therefore, nothing to tie me down or rush me along. I am looking for the complete experience, such as: Music, foods, cultures, traditions, arts, friends etc. I’m an adventure seeker.
Also, I hitched-hiked throughout USA, and Canada it has been a very unique, and exciting experience for me. I have met very generous Americans, and Canadians, some invited me to their homes for diner, and stayed over night, some offered me money, and they were very insisting. Also, on so many different occasions, I gave money, and put Gas in their cars to some motorist, which of whom, they gave me RIDE!
I never been married, and never will. Also, I don’t have any kids, because kids are big responsibilities.
Regarding religion.I don’t have any. All religions evolve out of Mythology, all Hocus, Pocus, Jumpo Pumpo, Witch Doctor Kamongo! Also, I believe, everybody entitle to his or her believe.
I don’t believe in Nationality or Religion, I considered those are the most two stupid ideas the man ever invented, If you aren’t one of us, you are a DEVIL, that make no sense, that hetrate, that bigotry.
What kind of justice that, either heaven, or hell fire, that’s too extreme.
I believe in peoples, humans, I’m Humanistic. Regardless of any different, every person is my sister or my brother, if some peoples don’t like me, that’s their problems, I keep going, never look behind.
My ultimate goal is to go all over the GLOBE, and be able to say, I have friends all over the GLOBE.
Also, I’m the author of the books: ” Wesson, and Smith Still in Control “, ” Rome Was a Corporation ” , ” What happened to Judea Christo Ethos? “, ” USA Stand for United Sheeps of America “, ” Epic Of Gilgamesh, and Book of the Dead Vs The Old Testament, and Koran “, ” Nation States VS Corporate States “, ” The Americans Are The Most Friendliest, and Generous Peoples On Earth “, ” Across Good Old USA, no Money Down “, ” Politicians, TV, Calculator, Computer and The Educational System Made Ass Out Of Americans “, ” NATO stand for North America Terrorist Organization “, ” 911 Was a Wake Up Call Vs. 911 Remote Control, Fundamentalists Jews, Christians, and Muslims, they are going to destroy the whole world! “, ” The Intellectual Elites in America Are Top of the Line, but average Americans Are Damn Idiots “, ” People are People, No Matter Where you are “, The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly “, ” Americans Got Shit & and Stick! “. ” The Have Not, and Those Mother Whom They Have It !, ” AmericanTreat Each Other Like Shit “, ” Life Is a Game “, ” US Goverment is a terrorist organization “… No, no just kidding!!!!!
Budget Euro Trip: How and when did you decide to travel and quit the ‘usual life’?
Ibrahim: I want to travel since I was a kid, but I started in 1977 to Rome, Italy, I have only $5.00.
Budget Euro Trip: Is it possible to travel without money or with a tight budget?
Ibrahim: Yes, its possible to travel without money or on tight budget. Being a Street Vender, Playing Music, Work for few Months, BEGGING for MONEY,…
Budget Euro Trip: What did you enjoy the most from this experience?
Ibrahim: FREEDOM, FREEDOM the most I have enjoying from this EXPERIENCE!
Thanks a lot!
I wanted to write something about couchsurfing (CS to make it shorter) long time ago but I couldn’t find the right moment for it. Now it is. As per the picture, I wanted to stay one night in Bratislava and, after sending 10 (TEN) requests I received only one response that was negative.
Wouldn’t you say that CS is dead? I would and here are some more reasons.
I have joint CS recently, in December 2009, when I finally moved to a bigger place so that I could have hosted someone. Right! because the original idea of couchsurfing was this one: to HOST an unknown traveller and to get HOSTED by someone you have never met before. To me it sounded incredibly nice and I was happy to try it!
Despite living in a small city in Czech rep, Brno, not really a touristic destination, I hosted couples of travellers within the first two years, then I started to travel and I had wonderful experiences being hosted by someone (with whom I am still in touch, Laura from Brasov and Sara from Constanta, both in Romania for examples).
This was long time ago, unfortunately. As for the picture shown at the beginning of the post, it became impossible to find someone able and willing to host – unless you are a girl, I wonder why…
I have a bit of experience, 27 positive reviews (only positive!), an updated profile with all kind of information, so what is wrong with the actual CS?
Well, many things. Starting from the moment when CS became a corporation (yes, suck lovely idea is since 2011 a fu.kin corporation!), many old and committed members of the community signed out and founded another free hosting one: bewelcome
However the issues were already before, with CS becoming very popular and attracting new people that were not aware nor bonded with the CS spirit. What is a CS spirit? Easy, as the website states: ‘Travel the world, explore your city and host new friends. Couchsurfing is the world’s largest travel community.’ Travelling, hosting and get hosted by someone.
Nowadays most of the members join the community either to sleep for free or to ‘meet new people’. How? Try to search for a couch and see the amount of members that are not offering it or that joint CS only to ‘coffee and chat’.
Yes, that is the REAL problem. CS is now a social network if not even a dating platform, people would rather join the CS events, party and social activities more than travelling and using it for the original purpose.
Having fun, meeting new people is NOTHING bad, of course, but joining a travelling website ONLY to drink during the parties and socialize with foreigners it IS! This is the new trend and it will not change. I tried to search for a couch in several cities, sending dozens of request (yes, the website itself suggest to send an high number of requests…), receiving ONLY negative answers or not even them.
I don’t want to go to details about another ‘HOT’ and controversial topic, people joining CS to have sex… Most of couchsurfers know what I am talking about, the website was nicknamed ‘cocksurfer’ for some reasons.
I can tell you my HONEST experience, I had NEVER done anything, sexual related, either with a host or a guest. I might be stupid but I had respect for the original idea and I never wanted to spoil it. Once, in Poland I refused to ‘share’ a bed with the girl that was hosting me. It was not because I didn’t like her, I explained her that I considered her as a CS host and that I would have come back to her place under different ‘motivation’, if she wanted. So she did and I came back to poland few weeks after.
However I’ve heard many stories (funny or weird to say the least) from other members. Again, there is NOTHING bad in having attraction from someone unknown, so I don’t want to judge this point and people who ‘had fun’ thanks to CS, however many times it was the ONLY reason to use CS and in many cases it went too far.
Eventually I discovered that staying in a hostel is much funnier, hostels are (usually) in very good location, I can have my own freedom to do what I want, go to bed or wake up at any time I want and meet interesting people and travellers, as the first people I met with CS were
Couchsurfing is dead, long live at couchsurfing!
